Employment
Unemployment is a huge issue in Transkei. Eastern Cape Province has the highest unemployment figures of South Africa. This are only the official statistics.
In the rural areas of Transkei, where we operate, about 85% of the people is unemployed.
Families struggle to survive with only a small pension or child grant.
As far as possible we want to support families to earn some money. Our teachers can maintain their families with their income. We try to support more local initiatives where people can get an income from.
Clean & Green Coffeebay
Another huge issue in and around Coffee Bay is waste management. As a result of modern society coming in the area Coffeebay is flooded with plastics, cans, bottles, snackbags, paper and cartons. Harmful for humans, animals and environment. When sorted, people can make a living out of garbage.
Together with local businesses we regurlay tried so set up a recycle centre.
Everytime we are around we organize besch- and village cleanups.
Till now it are temporarely and small actions. the Coffeebay youth and some outlaws from the vollage earned some money with it.
We hope for the future there will be a recycling center and 2 or 3 families can make a living out of garbage.
Wild Coast Carpenters
When we couldn't find a company to make good-quality wooden furniture for the préschools.we decided to realise a Carpentry Workshop. Together with Herbert Lotz, owner of Wild Coast Carpenters the workshop was realised in 2014.
Except we needed wooden schoolfurniture it also provides an opportunity for young local men to develop their carpentry skills, under the supervision of Herbert.
Herbert is a skilled carpenter professional and above that he has professional tools and machines to furnish a full-fledged carpentry.
